Maersk explores transatlantic route for nuclear container ships

Lloyd's Register, A.P. Moller–Maersk, South Carolina Ports, and the Port of Felixstowe launched the Pink Corridor project to evaluate the operating conditions for a nuclear-powered container ship between the United Kingdom and the United States. The analysis examines technical, regulatory, and operational aspects, including safety, nuclear material protection, and cyber resilience. The initiative remains in a conceptual stage with no decision yet on the vessel's construction.

Lloyd's Register, A.P. Moller–Maersk, South Carolina Ports, and the Port of Felixstowe launched the Pink Corridor project to evaluate the necessary conditions for operating a nuclear-powered container ship between the United Kingdom and the United States. The analysis takes the Felixstowe-Charleston route as a reference.

The study will examine technical, regulatory, and operational aspects, including safety, nuclear material protection, cyber resilience, emergency response, and insurance systems. Coordination between the maritime and nuclear regulations of both countries will also be analyzed.

The initiative remains in a conceptual stage and does not yet involve the construction of a vessel or a decision by Maersk to incorporate it into its fleet. The project coincides with the IMO's review of the Safety Code for Nuclear Merchant Ships and new international analyses on the use of modular reactors in maritime applications.
