Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS), in cooperation with China Shipbuilding Trading, inked an MOU with Nor Cruises for two firm orders and three option 84,000dwt cruise vessels.
This landmark cooperation represents the first mid-large cruise vessel newbuilding intent obtained by Shanghai Waigaoqiao shipyard from an international client, opening the global export market for domestically constructed cruise ships.
Little is known so far about Nor Cruises. It was incorporated in 2023 in Norway with Terje Berg Adolfsen listed as general manager and Knut Christian Abrahansen as chair.
The China newbuild project is still in development and capacities have not been announced but the ship is likely to be able to carry between 2,500-3,500 passengers depending on final designs.
Both parties will conduct in-depth technical verification, commercial negotiation and schedule confirmation in the follow-up stage to finalize and execute official shipbuilding agreements.
SWS is the only shipyard in China with mature serial construction capabilities for large cruise vessels. Its first large cruise ship, Adora Magic City, started operating in January 2024. A second ship for Adora Cruises, Adora Flora City, is scheduled for delivery in November 2026.
In March this year it unvelied plans to build two more large cruise ships with the option for a third for Adora Cruises. The first is expected to be delivered before the end of 2030.
