The Supervisory Board of Hapag-Lloyd AG has decided that Anders Boenaes, currently Senior Managing Director Network at Hapag-Lloyd, will take over as the company's new Chief Operating Officer (COO) starting October 1, 2026.
Boenaes, born in 1974, is of Danish nationality. He began his career in the maritime industry at Maersk, in Copenhagen, in 1993. In 2009, he became Vice President and Head of Africa Trades, while from 2014, he served as Senior Vice President Network for Maersk Liner Business.
He joined Hapag-Lloyd in 2020 as Senior Managing Director Network and a member of the Executive Committee. In his current role, he is responsible for the company's global liner service network, container fleet, and global operations.
"Anders Boenaes is a perfect fit for the COO position, and we are very pleased to have found an internal candidate within Hapag-Lloyd with deep knowledge of the business and the company. In recent years at Hapag-Lloyd, he has demonstrated his management and operational capabilities as Senior Managing Director Network. His extensive experience was fundamental for the successful establishment and implementation of the Gemini Cooperation between Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk," stated Karl Gernandt, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Hapag-Lloyd AG.
The same executive body also decided to extend the contract of Chief Terminal & Infrastructure Officer (CTIO), Dheeraj Bhatia, until December 31, 2029.
Dheeraj Bhatia, born in 1973, is of Indian nationality. He joined Hapag-Lloyd as Managing Director and was initially in charge of the India region. Since 2018, he has been based in Dubai, where he serves as Senior Managing Director Region Middle East, Indian Subcontinent and Africa.
Bhatia was appointed a member of the Executive Board of Hapag-Lloyd AG effective January 2024. He was also named CEO of Hanseatic Global Terminals, an entity that consolidates Hapag-Lloyd's stakes in terminals and infrastructure.
"Dheeraj Bhatia and his team have successfully established Hanseatic Global Terminals, laying the groundwork for a global terminal operating platform through strategic investments and continuing the expansion of Hapag-Lloyd's global terminal network.
"The Supervisory Board is convinced that, with the new structure of the Executive Board, the company is very well prepared to seize the various opportunities that arise, but also to manage the challenges ahead," added the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Hapag-Lloyd AG.
