Klaveness Dry Bulk completed its first cement clinker shipment in several years, loading in Cam Pha, Vietnam, and discharging in Ivory Coast, Africa.
Traditionally, clinker imports to West Africa were carried out on geared vessels. However, changing market conditions and lower steel production in Europe have altered sourcing patterns, with more clinker now being imported from Vietnam and Southern China, transported on larger, gearless Panamax vessels.
"At Klaveness Dry Bulk and Baumarine, we will continue to support this trade and be a committed partner, helping to transport cargo efficiently between Asia and West Africa, while supporting industrial growth and infrastructure development in the region," the company stated in a public announcement.
On a large scale, these vessels can benefit from a trading position closer to the dynamic grain markets of the East Coast of South America, which in turn helps eliminate ballast voyages.
At the same time, significant investments in port infrastructure in West Africa have expanded opportunities for these larger vessels.
