Long Beach Container Terminal (LBCT) handled the inaugural call of the OOCL Iris as part of its route within the Pacific China Central 1 (PCC1) service.
The Hong Kong-flagged unit is capable of moving 16,828 TEU. It measures 366 meters in length, 51 meters in beam, and has a deadweight of 165,509 tons.
"The Port of Long Beach welcomed the OOCL Iris, a 16,000 TEU vessel launched in 2024, for the first time at the Long Beach Container Terminal. Fair winds and following seas, and we look forward to seeing you and your crew many more times here in Long Beach," communicated the Port of Long Beach.
The milestone was commemorated onboard with the presentation of an official plaque dedicated to its captain and crew, expressing the port authority's wishes for all their future voyages to be safe and prosperous.
The vessel, part of the Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) fleet, was the second in a series of ten new 16,000 TEU container ships ordered by OOCL. Furthermore, it was established as the first to be delivered by Nantong Cosco KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. (Nacks).
"Iris not only refers to a type of flower, but also represents OOCL's proprietary computer system, the Integrated Regional Information System (IRIS), of which the company is immensely proud," the shipping company communicated in 2024.
"Launched in 1999 as a revolutionary innovation, it integrated the business processes of all OOCL offices globally, consolidating customer shipments and financial information into a single system, thus transforming the company's operations. Over the years, through continuous updates supported by advanced technologies, this system has been one of the key factors in OOCL's ability to face and overcome challenges," it added.
