The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) continues its efforts to recover 46 empty containers that fell into the sea from the vessel MV Span Asia 39. The containers were lost approximately 1.78 nautical miles west of Hamilo Point in Nasugbu. According to the Southern Tagalog District Coast Guard, "the MV Span Asia 39 departed from the Davao International Container Terminal in Panabo, Davao del Norte, carrying a total of 332 container units bound for North Port Manila." "Approximately at 11:00 AM today (September 3), while the vessel was sailing and approaching the waters near Calatagan, Batangas, it encountered adverse sea conditions accompanied by constant and strong swaying. Allegedly, the container lashings loosened while the vessel was sailing in the vicinity of Hamilo Point, about 1.5 nautical miles from the nearest coast. This resulted in the loss of 46 container units at sea, corresponding to 30 units of 20 feet, 11 units of 40 feet, and 5 open-top container units," the statement added. After issuing the corresponding alarm, Coast Guard personnel went to the scene, deploying a drone to monitor the situation from the air and always in contact with the captain of the MV Span Asia 39. Subsequently, it was detailed that "the CGSS of Nasugbu was ordered to establish command and control at the incident site to direct response actions with the support of the Local Government Unit and Bantay Dagat in Nasugbu. Preventive navigation warnings and VHF transmissions were immediately issued to alert all transiting vessels to maintain extreme vigilance and exercise utmost caution." In addition, it was indicated that "the BRP Malapascua, a 44-meter multi-purpose response vessel of the PCG, will be deployed to expedite the search, drift tracking, and containment operations for the lost container units." Currently, the Coast Guard remains on site conducting search operations for the containers.
