With women making up only 1.2% of seafarers, shipping has a major opportunity to broaden its talent pool, BIMCO’s Ship Manager Advisory Panel heard at its latest meeting.
Meeting on 25 September 2026, the panel discussed the recruitment of women seafarers alongside another pressing workforce issue: ensuring fair treatment for crew facing criminalisation or abandonment
Fleet Management presented the case for encouraging more women to pursue careers at sea. Panel members supported efforts to create a more diverse maritime workforce, while stressing that safety, respect and proper onboard standards are fundamental to attracting and retaining seafarers.
The discussion also covered BIMCO’s continuing work on the criminalisation and fair treatment of seafarers, part of our broader policy work on supporting maritime workforce sustainability.
BIMCO continues to advocate for seafarers to be treated fairly and to raise awareness among the industry and regulatory bodies. Our Seafarers Deserve Fair Seas campaign highlights some of the challenges seafarers face and the need for greater protection.
We will continue these discussions with ship managers and other industry stakeholders, with the Ship Manager Advisory Panel expected to meet again in early 2027.
