The Panama Maritime Authority (AMP) informs the public that the vessel MIN JIANG KOU, registered in the Marshall Islands, is in Panamanian waters undergoing specialized salvage operations, after a fire broke out on board while the vessel was approximately 600 nautical miles from Panama.
The vessel, a Ro-Ro type (a vessel designed to transport cars, trucks, and heavy machinery), is unmanned and remains in a blackout condition, meaning without electrical power on board.
Following the incident, the specialized salvage company requested the vessel's entry into Panamanian waters to carry out the necessary work for its stabilization and to ensure the safety conditions that will allow its subsequent transfer to a shipyard in Asia.
On the night of September 7, an increase in temperature was recorded in certain areas of the vessel's decks, a situation that is being addressed through hull cooling efforts.
The circumstances related to this increase remain under technical evaluation. Currently, three (3) tugboats are participating in the operations to attend to and stabilize the vessel.
The AMP continues to monitor the salvage operations and the safety conditions of the vessel, in coordination with the specialized company responsible for handling the incident.
