Petroperú detected a new clandestine connection at kilometer 825+620 of the Norperuano Oil Pipeline (ONP), in the province of Sechura, Piura region, which caused the perforation of the pipeline and an oil leak that affected the surrounding land.
This is the sixth clandestine connection identified between June and what has transpired in August in this section of the ONP. The previous ones were detected at kilometers 805, 790, 806, 835, and 815. In the latter case, no crude oil theft was evident; however, the perforation of the pipeline generated a contingency that required immediate attention.
Given the new incident, Petroperú activated its emergency response plan to control the leak, repair the pipeline, and carry out cleaning and remediation work in the affected area.
Tools allegedly used to make the clandestine connection were found in the area, including a drill and shovels. The affected point is located in a desert area of Sechura, far from populated centers.
Petroperú reported that it will communicate what happened to the supervisory entities and will file a complaint with the competent authorities for the corresponding investigations and the determination of responsibilities.
The company stated that it will continue to carry out surveillance and response actions to protect the integrity of the ONP, a strategic infrastructure for the transport of hydrocarbons in the country.
Given the repeated occurrence of clandestine connections, Petroperú requested that the competent authorities intensify control and investigation actions to identify and sanction those responsible.
