This initiative will allow leveraging the existing port, logistics, and maritime infrastructure of private companies to ensure the transfer of food, medicines, and other essential goods.
The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) and DP World Callao S.R.L., Concessionaire of the South Pier Terminal of the Port Terminal of Callao, announce the implementation of the Callao–Paita Maritime Humanitarian Corridor, a logistical alternative that will allow for the rapid and organized transfer of humanitarian aid to Piura in the event of emergencies that affect or interrupt land connectivity.
This initiative will allow leveraging the existing port, logistics, and maritime infrastructure operated by the private company to ensure the transfer of food, medicines, and other essential goods to areas affected by an emergency caused by the El Niño Phenomenon (ENSO).
As part of the action plan, the MTC, in coordination with competent entities, will channel and concentrate donations and humanitarian aid, in addition to establishing priorities and determining their destination. This ensures an organized response to emerging needs.
Once the aid is delivered for mobilization, DP World Callao will articulate the logistics chain, which includes the preparation and consolidation of cargo, its transfer to the Port Terminal of Callao, prioritized port attention, embarkation, and monitoring of the operation to Paita.
Maritime transport will be carried out through the service of the shipping company Hapag-Lloyd on the Callao–Paita route, with prioritized unloading at the Port Terminal of Paita and subsequent continuation to its final destination. Storage, terminal use, and transfer activities carried out by private operators will be assumed by them, without generating costs for the State.
The corridor constitutes an alternative solution that will allow for a previously organized humanitarian chain ready to be activated in the event of a possible interruption of roads, as the northern zone of Peru is not immune to these events generated by ENSO.
Finally, DP World S.R.L. is evaluating a second stage to extend this connection to the Port Terminal of Salaverry, in La Libertad, according to the operational viability of the port terminals.
