Marcelo Bustamante, CEO of the logistics operator Cosmos Global Logistics, highlights that during the first half of the year the company consolidated the integration of the logistics services of the Andino Investment Holding group and aims to strengthen its presence in the mining sector. At the same time, they warn of the need for greater traceability in logistics operations to help confront the advance of illegal mining.
How have your results been optimized after the creation of Cosmos Global Logistics?
One of the main advances is the integration of our maritime and port operations together with customs services, temporary and customs warehousing, storage, transport and distribution.
This allows us to offer and manage comprehensive logistics, providing end-to-end solutions under the same operator and with our own resources, strengthening the coordination and control of the logistics chain.
Integration also reinforces Cosmos Global Logistics's ability to handle more complex projects and operations and meet the needs of sectors such as mining, energy, infrastructure and industry. The objective is to go from being solely a service provider to becoming a strategic partner capable of integrally managing the logistics needs of our clients.
How has demand in the mining sector evolved?
Mining is one of our priority sectors, due to the complexity of its operations and the opportunities that exist in the country in this area due to its significant growth potential.
We seek to respond to the specific needs of this sector, which requires continuity, security and reliability in the handling of its cargo. By centralizing different logistics services, we facilitate the coordination of operations and generate efficiencies for our clients, accompanying them in both their import and export processes.
What projects do you have underway?
By 2027, we expect to double our installed capacity for storage and temporary and customs warehousing operations. This expansion will allow us to handle a greater volume of operations and strengthen our offer of comprehensive logistics services for the mining sector. [Editor's note: Currently, the group manages a storage area of 47,000 m2.]
What is your sales projection for the mining sector and what is the potential market you are targeting?
Our sales projection for 2026, as Cosmos Global Logistics, is to exceed US$ 55 million. Within this expectation, attracting new clients from the mining sector represents a significant growth opportunity, considering the dynamism of this industry and the demand for specialized logistics solutions.
We know that the Peruvian mining sector is highly demanding and requires international service standards with a strong focus on security, efficiency and responsiveness, in line with the complexity of its operations. As Cosmos, we seek to accompany this evolution.
What security process do you follow for the transfer of mining cargo?
Security is a fundamental component of our operations. For this reason, we have processes and controls aimed at ensuring adequate management of operations during the different stages of the logistics chain, from the reception and handling of cargo, to the transport, storage and delivery of cargo to the client.
We have traceability of all the cargo we move and transport, which allows us to control the operation and react in time to any eventuality.
Regarding illegal mining, are you afraid that regulation will become stricter for both the shipment of minerals and the reception and transfer of mining inputs?
Illegal mining represents a challenge for the entire chain linked to foreign trade and we consider it important that any regulation clearly differentiates between formal operations and those that operate outside the law.
What measures do you take to counteract illegal mining?
As logistics operators, we apply due diligence processes and controls on our clients and the operations we manage, in accordance with current regulations. This ensures that our services are carried out within the framework of legality.
How could legislation be improved to help differentiate between legal and illegal operations?
We believe that legislation can continue to be strengthened through greater traceability mechanisms and better articulation between public entities and the private sector. This would allow for more precise identification of the origin of minerals and inputs, as well as the participants in each operation.
How have your operations evolved during the first half of the year?
During the first half of the year, our focus was on consolidating the integration of Cosmos and Infinia into Cosmos Global Logistics, which has marked the beginning of a new stage for Andino Investment Holding's logistics business.
In addition, we have made progress in building a platform that allows us to have comprehensive visibility of our business units: including our maritime and port services.
This process is allowing us to strengthen coordination between business units and expand the ability to offer comprehensive solutions under a single operator.
