The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) has initiated the maritime transfer of 20 modular bridges, distributed in 15 containers, to Piura, via the Callao–Paita Maritime Humanitarian Corridor, to address potential impacts caused by the El Niño phenomenon.
From the DP World facilities at the Port of Callao, the Vice Minister of Transport, Gabriela Carrasco Carrasco, participated in the loading of the structures bound for the Paita Port Terminal. The shipment was supported by DP World and the company Hapag-Lloyd.
The Vice Minister explained that terrestrial transport would have required eight trips per modular bridge, totaling 160 trips to mobilize the 20 structures. The humanitarian corridor allowed them to be loaded in a single sailing and reduced transit time.
She also indicated that this operation was coordinated with the National Commission for Risk Management of the El Niño Phenomenon, chaired by the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation. The transfer of the modular bridges constituted the first shipment through this humanitarian corridor.
It should be noted that private operators will cover the costs corresponding to storage, terminal use, and maritime transport of the cargo, so this operation will not generate costs for the State.
The structures will be available for installation in areas of northern Peru where they are needed, according to emerging requirements. The corridor is also planned for transporting food, medicine, and other essential goods in the event of a terrestrial route interruption.
