The Peruvian port system, led by the National Port Authority (APN), an entity attached to the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), continues to consolidate its prominence in Latin America. This is revealed by ECLAC's FAL Bulletin 414 (Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean), considered one of the most relevant reports on the region's port performance during the 2024-2025 period.
According to the report, the Port of Santos (Brazil) leads the regional ranking with 5.48 million TEUs mobilized, followed by Manzanillo (Mexico) with 3.92 million and Cartagena Bay (Colombia) with 3.70 million.
In this context, the Port of Callao consolidated its fourth-place position in Latin America and the Caribbean, maintaining the position achieved in 2023, after mobilizing 3.07 million TEUs. This result allowed it to surpass Manzanillo International Terminal (MIT) of Panama and reaffirm its position as one of the main maritime hubs in the region.
It is worth noting that, in recent years, the Port of Callao has maintained a constant presence among the main ports in the region, moving from fifth place in 2019 to fourth place in 2023 and 2024. This performance is due to the dynamism of Peruvian foreign trade, as well as investments made in port infrastructure, technological modernization, and improvements in operational efficiency.
Likewise, ECLAC highlights the growing prominence of the Port of Chancay, considered one of the most strategic logistics projects in South America, which, according to international projections, could reach 3.5 million TEUs by 2032.
If these estimates materialize, Chancay could progressively join the group of the main ports in Latin America, thanks to its ability to offer a direct connection between South America and Asia, without the need for transshipments at other regional nodes.
These results demonstrate the strengthening of Peru's port infrastructure, the promotion of investments, and the country's strategic positioning as a key player in international maritime trade.
In this regard, the APN continues to promote the modernization and competitiveness of the National Port System through the promotion of investments, the strengthening of infrastructure and digital and logistical connectivity, as well as coordination with national and international actors, thus contributing to consolidating Peru as a strategic logistics hub for the region.
