Propane Torch Use Caused Fatal Explosion on NYC Sludge Tanker Hunts Point

The National Transportation Safety Board determined that unapproved use of a propane torch triggered an explosion aboard the municipal sludge tanker Hunts Point on May 26, 2025, killing Chief Engineer Raymond Feige, a 34-year veteran of NYC's Department of Environmental Protection. The torch ignited flammable methane gas in the hold. Damage to the vessel is estimated at $10 million, and the tanker remains out of service.
