AIDA Cruises supplied more than 8,500 tonnes of ISCC EU-certified bio LNG to AIDAnova in 2025 through ports in Hamburg, Kiel and Zeebrugge. The bio-LNG originates from European biogas plants and is made available through mass-balancing approaches.
The company participates in the Campfire alliance, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, focusing on renewable ammonia-based energy conversion technologies. AIDA also contributes to the HydroPoLEn research project through Carnival Maritime's decarbonisation team, developing hydrogen fuel systems for marine propulsion.
"However, several challenges remain for the broader adoption of e-fuels, including fuel availability in ports, industrial-scale production capacities, internationally harmonised regulatory frameworks, and the lack of commercially viable pricing structures in Germany and Europe," said Dirk Inger, SVP public affairs, communication & sustainability, AIDA Cruises.
AIDA Cruises recorded 340 shore power connections in 2024 and 440 in 2025, with approximately 540 connections planned for 2026. The company operates shore power capabilities across 17 European ports, including Hamburg, Warnemünde, Kiel, Southampton, Bergen, Oslo, Stockholm, Rotterdam, Copenhagen and Le Havre.
In Europe and globally, "further acceleration of shoreside infrastructure development is essential," emphasised Inger.
The AIDA Innovation Hub application phase concluded with more than 150 submissions from start-ups, technology companies, industry partners and research institutions. Submissions focused on decarbonisation, sustainability and artificial intelligence solutions for the maritime industry.
Shortlisted projects will be presented to an expert jury in Rostock on September 16. Selected winners will collaborate with AIDA on implementation studies or pilot projects aboard AIDA vessels.
