(4:30 p.m. EDT) – When Legend of the Seas debuts next month, it will feature artwork from Royal Caribbean's Artist Discovery Program, which gives rising artists a platform for their work.
Through the program, the cruise line works with artists from the places its ships visit to introduce passengers to destination-inspired artwork both on and off the ship. It's an organic way to introduce a port's culture and spirit to everyone onboard.
Legend of the Seas will feature artwork from six artists.
"Since its introduction on Icon of the Seas, the Artist Discovery Program has continued to evolve how we connect guests with the places we visit by championing up-and-coming artists and giving them a global stage to showcase their work," said Jay Schneider, chief product innovation officer for Royal Caribbean.
Artwork won't just be placed onboard Legend of the Seas. The line will bring the program to destinations like its Royal Beach Club Paradise Island in Nassau, The Bahamas, to create a "seamless ship-to-shore experience, where the art brings each destination to life."
Onboard Legend of the Seas, the commissioned artwork will be showcased in the embarkation and welcome area when guests first arrive, the Royal Promenade neighborhood, the Suite Sundeck and Suite Sundeck Lobby, the Royal Promenade entrance on Deck 6 and the passenger boarding area on Deck 2.
Royal Caribbean vetted applications from 250 artists from the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America before awarding grants to the following six individuals:
Legend of the Seas begins sailing in July with seven-night Western Mediterranean getaways from Barcelona and Rome (Civitavecchia). By November, the ship will be in the Caribbean, homeporting in Fort Lauderdale.
