The National Confederation of Port Workers of Chile (Conatraport) denied the accusations made by the Undersecretary of the Interior, Máximo Pavez, who claimed that members of the group had assaulted ministry officials when attempting to submit documentation for 80 special pensions. Additionally, union members announced they would file a complaint with the Comptroller's Office to clarify the facts.
Through a statement, Conatraport referred to the letter signed by Pavez, which outlined the aforementioned situation. In response, the confederation stated that "assertions are made that we consider false, libelous, and gravely damaging to the honor of our organization and its leaders."
"This document attempts to justify the Undersecretary of the Interior's refusal to receive the applications corresponding to our unions represented in the 2023-2026 Special Pensions Agreement of the then Port Union, an agreement of which two of our current National Coordinators were guarantors and signatories," the letter indicated.
Regarding the alleged assaults on officials from the Ministry of the Interior, Conatraport asserted that "this statement is completely false. Our entry was authorized by the guard personnel in charge of building access, a fact that can be corroborated. Furthermore, the personnel were informed that if they could not receive our application folders, they should simply stamp the presentation document as rejected, which was not necessary as they agreed to receive our applications. Likewise, it is claimed that our actions would have intimidated the department's personnel, a situation that also does not correspond to reality."
"It is especially serious that an authority of the Republic attributes illegal conduct to our organization without any basis. Such imputations directly affect our institutional honor, that of our leaders, and also that of those who legitimately participated in said process," the circular added.
Furthermore, the statement emphasized that "even more concerning is that the same letter textually states that 'the Government, clearly and respectfully, communicates that, in the context of the current Pensions Agreement with port leaders, reception is not possible,' without expressing any legal basis to support this decision."
In relation to the measures that will be taken by the union, it was announced that "we have decided to initiate the corresponding legal actions to safeguard our honor and that of those who were unjustly involved in these events. Likewise, we will present the background to the Comptroller General of the Republic so that it may investigate and determine the veracity of the imputations made by the Undersecretary of the Interior."
Finally, it was added that "similarly, we will request the initiation of an administrative investigation aimed at clarifying how an internal document ended up being sent to another organization and subsequently publicly disseminated, without our Confederation having been previously notified, nor was there a request made through the procedures established by the Transparency Law," the statement concluded.
