The Port of Antwerp-Bruges (Belgium) awarded the tender contract for the renovation of the road areas of Oosterweeleiland. The consortium that will take charge of the works will be TM Crusoe, and the works will focus on the Wilmarsdonk and Oosterweel bridges.
In this regard, details of this milestone were provided on the Belgian port's website, where it was reported that "the Wilmarsdonk and Oosterweel bridges have reached the end of their useful life and need to be replaced. At the same time, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges is improving traffic flow and road safety on the main routes of Oosterweeleiland with new transport infrastructure."
Regarding the project, it was communicated that "the Wilmarsdonk bridge will be replaced by a drawbridge for railway traffic. It will only be lowered to allow trains to pass, so that inland waterway traffic can circulate unobstructed most of the time."
Meanwhile, regarding the Oosterweel infrastructure, it was detailed that "it will be replaced by a high fixed bridge for trucks, cars, and cyclists. River traffic will be able to circulate freely underneath."
Furthermore, it was reported that "the railway tracks will be partially diverted to ensure they are as separated as possible from road traffic," the publication concluded.
