A major fire broke out aboard the Italian-flagged Ro-Ro/Passenger ship GNV Phoenix while undergoing maintenance at dock number 29–30 of Molo del Carmine within the shipyard area of the Port of Naples. No casualties were reported among the maintenance workers and ship crew.
At approximately 6:30 pm local time, the vessel issued a distress call and requested assistance from the Port Authority and rescue services. According to the Initial report, the exact origin of the fire is unclear, with smoke rising from the ship's lower decks or directly from the engine room.
Emergency services, including tugs, Coast Guard patrol vessels and shore-based firefighters, arrived to extinguish the blaze aboard the vessel. No injuries were reported among the ship's crew, and the eight workers of the repair company were evacuated by the company's officials.
Port operations in Naples continued normally, although access to waters surrounding docks 29 and 30 was temporarily restricted to support firefighting and rescue efforts. Three tugboats remained on site to assist in containing the fire.
The cause of the fire and extent of damage in the affected areas will be determined once the fire has been fully extinguished and cooled.
