A major collision occurred between a Croatia-flagged high-speed craft, Krilo Eclipse, and a French-flagged sailboat in the Split Straits, Croatia, claiming the lives of four individuals and injuring four others on 14 June.
The incident occurred at around 11:30 am local time in the Splitske Vrata passage. The sailboat was carrying eight Czech nationals when it collided with the high-speed craft carrying 118 passengers and 7 crew members en route from Split to Hvar.
Promptly, a search and rescue operation was launched involving a helicopter, the Coast Guard, the Croatian Maritime Rescue Service and several other boats in the vicinity.
Four individuals of the sailboat were rescued and taken to the hospital, while three died and one went missing. Search and recovery operations continued overnight. On 15 June, police divers located the sunken sailboat at a depth of more than 50 meters and recovered the body of the fourth missing person from the sailboat's cabin, confirming the death toll at four.
All the passengers aboard the Krilo Eclipse were disembarked at Milna and then transferred to another ship that took them to Hvar.
The damaged Krilo Eclipse was then towed to the Port of Split, where visible damage was observed on the starboard side of the hull. An on-site investigation has commenced aboard the vessel under the supervision of the deputy county state attorney, while maritime authorities continue examining the accident scene.
According to the Split Port Authority, a complex operation is being planned to recover both the sunken sailboat and the remaining wreckage from the seabed. The circumstances leading to the collision remain under investigation.
