Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) announced that it signed the first annual LNG supply contract with Seaspan Energy for car carrier vessels in the Port of Vancouver, Canada.
Since completing the first LNG bunkering operation on the west coast of North America on Saturday, March 1, 2025, MOL has carried out several additional LNG bunkering operations in the region.
North America is one of the main trade routes for car carrier vessels, and with the recent delivery of new LNG-fueled vessels, ensuring a stable supply of this fuel in the area has become increasingly important.
Harly Penner, President of Seaspan Energy, commented that "we greatly value the relationship between Seaspan Energy and MOL. MOL was the first car carrier operator to receive LNG bunkering services in the Port of Vancouver, and we are proud to continue supporting their operations in Vancouver through this annual LNG supply agreement. This alliance reflects our shared commitment to advancing low-emission shipping and supporting the sector's transition towards GHG emission neutrality."
On behalf of MOL, Daisuke Fujihashi, General Manager of the Marine Fuel GX Division, stated that "we are extremely pleased to further strengthen our alliance with Seaspan Energy through this contract for LNG fuel supply. Looking ahead, we will continue to deepen our collaboration with Seaspan Energy in the field of clean fuels, including bio-LNG, and remain committed to offering our customers more alternatives to achieve more sustainable supply chains."
The MOL Group considers the adoption of alternative fuels as one of the key strategies to achieve net-zero GHG emissions, within the framework of its Environmental Vision. As part of this initiative, the group plans to proactively adopt LNG — easily applicable and economically viable in the short term — as a fundamental pillar of its transition efforts towards a low-carbon economy in the short and medium term.
