The Port of Rotterdam Authority has completed the comprehensive renovation and replacement of public lighting in the port area. Over a period of approximately eight years, more than 7,000 new light poles with LED lighting have been installed, 11,000 old poles and connections have been removed, and approximately 500 kilometers of new cabling network have been laid.
The new lighting system includes approximately 7,500 LED luminaires and nearly 100 public lighting cabinets. This improvement results in an energy consumption reduction of about 50% compared to the previous situation, which is equivalent to an annual energy saving of 1.6 million kWh and a decrease in CO2 emissions of approximately 1,030 tons per year.
Thanks to this improvement, the port area now has a modern, intelligent, and future-proof lighting system. By applying LED technology, dimmable lighting, and remote monitoring, not only has energy consumption been significantly reduced, but reliability has also increased.
Regulatory bodies, traffic offices, pipeline operators, companies along the routes, permit-issuing entities from the Municipality of Rotterdam, ProRail, Rijkswaterstaat, the Water Board, soil and explosive researchers, traffic light operators, Stedin, the engineering company, and contractors Hoeflake, BAM, and Van Gelder participated in the project.
"Thanks to perseverance, determination, and intensive teamwork, we have managed to carry out this enormous task. We can all be very proud of it," said Berte Simons, Director of Operations at the Port of Rotterdam Authority.
A completely new lighting system has been installed along tens of kilometers, from Maasvlakte 2 to the city ports. This involved burying cables, installing light poles, and replacing existing facilities. The project, therefore, went far beyond simply replacing luminaires; it also included the construction of an entirely new network under its own management.
