The Port of Southampton is strengthening its position as a vital link in the UK's renewable energy supply chains, while expanding its collaboration with Vestas, a global leader in sustainable wind energy technology.
Paul Reeves, Commercial Director at ABP, stated that "we are proud to support Vestas and contribute to the renewable energy supply chain. Managing components of this magnitude requires expertise, coordination, and commitment from multiple partners, and this operation demonstrates how effectively the region can collaborate. As the demand for sustainable energy grows, the Port of Southampton is ready to support the infrastructure that will drive a greener future."
Philip Williams, Managing Director of Williams Shipping (Marine), commented that "this operation highlights the strength of collaboration in the Solent region and demonstrates the specialized logistical expertise required to support the UK's renewable energy ambitions. We are proud to work alongside ABP and Vestas to contribute to the development of sustainable infrastructure projects across the UK."
Thanks to the collaboration with Williams Shipping and Vestas' manufacturing plant on the Isle of Wight, Southampton has become a strategic hub for the storage and subsequent export of onshore wind turbine blades, for both UK and international projects.
Each 68-meter long blade is manufactured on the Isle of Wight before being transported across the Solent by Williams Shipping. The company's specialized logistics team manages the complex operation, moving the blades by barge from the factory to the port warehouse.
