VFPA Builds Holdom Overpass to Improve Trade Flow

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is carrying out the Holdom Overpass project in collaboration with the City of Burnaby, CN, and the Government of Canada. This four-lane project will improve traffic flow and safety for the Burnaby community, in addition to increasing trade capacity and efficiency.

Aecon-Gateway Infrastructure Group Partnership is the contractor responsible for the design and construction. The new overpass will extend Holdom Avenue south, over the railway corridor and Still Creek, connecting it to Douglas Road and replacing the existing rail crossing.

This project is part of the Burnaby Rail Corridor Improvements Project, a series of road and rail enhancements that will optimize train flow between Burnaby and the port terminals of North Vancouver, while reducing the impact of growing trade on the local community.

In 2022, CN completed railway improvements, which included modernizing the Thornton Tunnel to reduce transit time between trains and constructing a new siding track connecting Willingdon and Piper Avenues.

Construction of the project began in December 2024. Based on feedback received during public consultation, VFPA will continue to publish information on upcoming construction activities and traffic impacts to keep the community informed.

Authorities urge drivers to exercise caution in the area, pay attention to changes in vehicular flow, obey signs and traffic personnel, and use alternative routes.
