The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that it had received reports of two maritime incidents off the coast of Oman, including one in which a tanker was hit by an unknown projectile.
In the first incident, a tanker was targeted by an unidentified object about 11 nautical miles northeast of Limah, Oman, which damaged its engine room and left the vessel without control, although no casualties or environmental impact were reported, according to the UKMTO.
Subsequently, the agency reported receiving a second report of an incident 21 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman. The captain of a tanker claimed to have seen a large splash and an explosion near the vessel, although no damage was reported.
Limah and Khasab are located on Oman's Musandam Peninsula, at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic point for maritime transport through which approximately one-fifth of the world's oil consumption passes.
Shipping through the waterway has faced increased risks in recent weeks with vessels reporting security incidents and some shipowners taking additional precautions as Iran and the United States intensify hostilities.
