Brasília, 10/15/2026 – The National Waterway Transportation Agency (ANTAQ), the Ministry of Ports and Airports (MPOR), and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MMA) will hold the workshop "Nature-based Solutions for Climate Adaptation in the Port Sector" on October 21 and 22. The meeting will take place at the Cultural Center of Brasília (CCB), in Asa Norte, and will feature the collaboration of GIZ, through the ProAdapta Project, Fundação Grupo Boticário, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The workshop aims to promote the exchange of experiences, identify challenges, and discuss ways to expand the adoption of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) as a strategy for adapting Brazilian ports to the impacts of climate change.
The event will be in-person and aimed at representatives and institutions active in the port sector, both public and private. Those interested in participating should fill out the registration form.
Nature-based Solutions involve actions for the conservation, restoration, and management of natural ecosystems, such as mangroves, restingas, dunes, and wetlands. These measures can contribute to reducing risks associated with sea-level rise, coastal erosion, and extreme weather events, in addition to complementing conventional engineering solutions and generating environmental and social benefits.
The workshop will provide a space for dialogue among participants to identify experiences already developed in the port sector, understand the main obstacles to the implementation of these solutions, and discuss opportunities for integration into the planning, management, and climate adaptation strategies of ports.
Program
The program will be divided into two days, combining technical presentations, thematic panels, and participatory activities.
On October 21, starting at 2 PM, there will be accreditation, an opening ceremony, lectures, and panels on the panorama of climate adaptation in the port sector, ecosystem services, and practical applications of Nature-based Solutions in coastal areas.
On October 22, starting at 9 AM, participants will be divided into working groups to map existing experiences, identify technical, institutional, regulatory, and financial challenges, and jointly build recommendations to expand the adoption of these solutions in Brazilian ports.

This initiative is part of project PJ02 – "Application of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in the waterway sector," from ANTAQ's Environmental and Waterway Safety Agenda 2025-2026. The discussions are also expected to provide input for the implementation of Action A1.M19 of the Climate Adaptation Plan for the Transport Sector, aimed at reducing climate risks and adapting port infrastructure.
