The Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) of Paraguay, responsible for the execution of the Bioceanic Bridge, incorporated specialized studies to verify the behavior of the structure under the conditions it will be exposed to during its useful life.
Through the JYI Consortium, made up of the companies Prosul, Intec S.A., and Inexa, aerodynamic tests were carried out at the Polytechnic University of Milan, Italy. These studies consisted of subjecting a scale model of the megastructure to high-intensity wind tests in a controlled environment.
The tests allowed for the analysis of the bridge's response to severe wind scenarios and provided information to carry out the corresponding verifications and calibrations of the structural design before the execution of the work.
Juliana Duarte, director of the JYI Consortium, explained that the Polytechnic University of Milan was selected for its experience in research and tests related to aerodynamics and the behavior of large structures against wind action.
During the tests, the scale model was exposed to conditions that simulated high-intensity wind scenarios. The procedure allowed for the evaluation of the structure's response and the verification of parameters related to its stability and aerodynamic behavior.
Wind tunnel tests are a tool used for the design of large bridges, especially in structures of great length and particular characteristics, such as the Bioceanic Bridge.
Based on the results obtained, specialists can identify the effects generated by wind action and make adjustments to the models used for structural calculations.
In the case of this project, the studies were carried out before the complete conclusion of the executive project. This allowed the results to be incorporated into the engineering process and for the corresponding design calibrations to be made.
In this way, the behavior of the structure against wind action was analyzed using calculation models and physical tests carried out on a scale model.
Monitoring during its useful life
The control mechanisms foreseen by the project also contemplate the operation stage. The Bioceanic Bridge will have a structural instrumentation and monitoring system to permanently track its behavior.
This tool will provide information on the actual response of the structure once it is operational, complementing the studies and verifications carried out during the design stage.
The combination of specialized tests, structural calculations, and instrumentation will allow the MOPC to have information for monitoring the bridge's behavior against the environmental and service conditions to which it will be subjected.
Strategic work for regional integration
The Bioceanic Bridge constitutes a strategic infrastructure to strengthen the road connection between Paraguay and Brazil, facilitating integration and transit between both countries.
The studies incorporated into the project allow for the advance evaluation of different scenarios and the establishment of monitoring tools to accompany the structure's behavior during its useful life.
