Inocar strengthens oceanographic surveillance in anticipation of El Niño phenomenon

The executive director of Inocar, Captain Juan Carlos Tapia, reported that Ecuador remains in an 'Active El Niño' phase, a preventive measure adopted by the National COE to strengthen institutional preparedness. He noted that the phenomenon has not yet been confirmed and that scientific monitoring continues.

Tapia explained that oceanic and atmospheric conditions show a high probability of the phenomenon evolving over the coming months. In September, a new research cruise will be conducted to verify the coupling between the ocean and atmosphere, a necessary condition to officially confirm El Niño.

Permanent monitoring will allow for strengthening planning to reduce possible impacts on road, port, and logistics infrastructure. Anticipating measures will contribute to preserving the continuity of maritime transport, supply chains, national production, and foreign trade.
