The Port Authority of Vigo and the University of Vigo (UVigo) have once again highlighted the close collaboration and solid institutional alliance that unites both entities to position Vigo as a benchmark in sustainability, technological innovation, and the Blue Economy.
Within the framework of a working meeting, the president of the APV, Carlos Botana, received the rector of UVigo, Carmen García Mateo. During the meeting, both leaders reviewed the extensive catalog of initiatives they are jointly developing and set the roadmap to strengthen their collaboration in research, talent training, and socioeconomic development.
Among the main issues addressed, the launch of a rigorous study commissioned to the university team led by Professor Carlos Rodríguez stands out. This study will analyze the socioeconomic impact (employment, added value, and commercial revitalization) generated by the Port of Vigo and its area of influence in relation to food, with a special focus on the fishing sector (fresh and frozen), fruit, and canning.
Furthermore, the incorporation and reinforcement of new representatives from the academic institution into port working bodies, such as the Blue Growth working groups or the Port Navigation Council, were discussed, thereby strengthening the transfer of knowledge between academia and port management.
The meeting also served to review the historically positive balance of projects in which the Port and the University work hand in hand. In recent years, both entities have successfully collaborated on prominent fishing and port research and training initiatives, such as PuertAlMar, MarENet, BlueFishing Training, SARIL, NaturPorts, or ImpulsaAzul, among others.
A new stage of strategic cooperation
Added to this solid trajectory are ambitious future challenges in which, once again, they will go hand in hand. Thus, APV and UVigo will begin a new stage of strategic cooperation in innovation, applied research, training, and the development of solutions applied to water, marine ecosystems, biodiversity, and the Blue Economy, while also collaborating through Campus do Mar for oceanic dissemination and innovation.
Among the new research proposals are various projects aimed at treating discharges using Nature-based Solutions (NbS), measuring underwater noise, and integrated assessment of pollutants in water and sediments.
Furthermore, the meeting served to ratify the signing of a new collaboration agreement that will strengthen internships for both students and researchers at the Port of Vigo, in addition to seeking synergies with the aim of bridging the gap between the business sector and university education, adapting student profiles to the real needs of companies in the sector.
Both Carlos Botana and Carmen García Mateo agreed that the sum of synergies between the Port and the University is the most effective way to transform scientific knowledge into environmental, economic, and social value for the city of Vigo and its entire surroundings.
