The president of the Port Authority of Castellón, Rubén Ibáñez, participated, along with Gonzalo Romero, councilor of the Castellón City Council, and the director of Castellón Airport, Raquel París, in the round table "Sustainable Transport and Mobility: the challenge of decarbonizing logistics," moderated by the director of Mediterráneo, Ángel Báez, and which is part of the VIII edition of the Ecoforum of the Valencian Community.
The event was inaugurated by the Minister of Environment, Infrastructure and Territory, Vicente Martínez Mus, and featured a keynote speech by Manuel Maqueda, professor of Special Programs in Applied Circular Economy and Regenerative Economy at Harvard University.
The day, organized by the newspaper, allowed for reflection on how to advance towards a cleaner, more efficient, and competitive industry, capable of reducing emissions, making better use of resources, and generating opportunities linked to green innovation. This forum, promoted by Simetría, the Castelló City Council, and Reciplasa, has the collaboration of PortCastelló, Marcial Vicent, UBE Corporation, and FCC.
During his speech, Ibáñez pointed out that "the priority of the Port Authority is to convert PortCastelló into the leading green logistics hub in Spain through intermodality and the offshore wind hub. At PortCastelló, sustainability is not a trend; it is a competitive advantage and a moral obligation. Being an industrial port demands the utmost respect for the environment; that is why we not only move goods, we move the future of Castellón responsibly."
The president of the Port Authority referred to offshore wind power and, in this regard, stated that "attracting sustainable energy projects is already a success. Offshore wind is the project in which we have placed the most hope, first because it is novel, second because of diversification and employment, and third because it is a great opportunity and puts Castellón on the map of Spain."
In relation to the indicators for measuring success, Ibáñez highlighted that "the great yardstick for measuring whether you are doing things well is being able to diversify and combine different activities in the same space; that is already a success. At this moment, we are pre-designing a unique, diversified, and sustainable energy hub that is not in the Mediterranean arc. There will be no other in Spain, and this is part of the success."
Regarding the new projects that symbolize this change, the head of PortCastelló explained that the railway "puts us in a first-rate energy role in the port of Castellón. Being able to transport goods throughout the European network is the great commitment to sustainability of the port of Castellón. This is the leitmotif of why the railway also reaches ports."
Ecoforum is an annual event consolidated as a meeting point between institutions, companies, experts, and social agents committed to a more responsible development model that places sustainability, circular economy, and ecological transition at the center of the debate.
This meeting is conceived as an open space to share knowledge, showcase experiences, and foster alliances between administrations, companies, and entities that are already working on the ecological transition. The interest lies in connecting global trends with concrete territorial challenges: industrial competitiveness, resilience to climate change, resource management, business innovation, and job creation linked to sustainable activities.
