Santander, June 16, 2026. The President of the Port Authority of Santander (APS), César Díaz, reported this morning on the progress of the construction works for the Raos 6 quay, highlighting that "the preloading of the quay has been completed to begin the process of consolidating the ground settlements."
"Once the ground settlement occurs, presumably in September, we will begin with the construction work of the retaining wall," he added.
This is a combined system (combi wall) made up of sheet piles and steel profiles. These materials were manufactured in Luxembourg and are already stockpiled in the port, after being transported by sea from the port of Antwerp.
Díaz assured that this infrastructure is "essential" to increase the Port's capacity, gaining berthing line and agility in port operations at public quays , "as it will allow the unloading of solid bulk onto hopper-trucks or by rapid lifting at the first line of the quay, in addition to general cargo."
The operation arises from the need to generate more berthing line for general cargo and solid bulk, following the significant increase in activity that has occurred at the North Raos Pier and the good progress of the container terminal.
The new quay represents an investment of 22.8 million euros, financed entirely with the Port Authority of Santander's own resources, and is being executed by the UTE formed by the companies SIEC and SATO. The execution period is twenty months.
The action, included in the APS Investment Plan for the period 2025-2029, will allow operators "to streamline their activity as much as possible under optimal conditions of productivity and quality, in line with the Port Authority's efficiency objectives," as highlighted by Díaz.
Likewise, he reiterated the institution's commitment to the economic development of Cantabria, "through the generation of employment and the promotion of new business opportunities for companies linked to the port."
Raos 6 Quay
The Raos 6 project consists of the construction of a new 212-meter-long multipurpose quay using a combined screen solution of sheet piles and steel profiles, anchored with tie rods to a micropiled cap, for a design draft of 12 meters deep.
