Alicante – November 2, 2026 – The transformation process undertaken by the Port Authority of Alicante and the projected investments to expand and modernize its infrastructure are beginning to attract international interest. A port delegation from China's Jiangsu province and the Port of Yangzhou visited the Port of Alicante this Monday to learn firsthand about its facilities, growth projects, and the possibilities it offers for establishing future commercial and logistical relationships.

During the meeting, their representatives showed particular interest in the characteristics of Alicante's docks, their drafts, railway connections, the future availability of land for industrial and logistical activities, and the possibilities for business implementation in the port environment.

The meeting also demonstrates Alicante's growing external appeal at a particularly relevant time for the port's future. The investments made in recent years, along with announced projects to expand its capacity, improve its connectivity, and generate new business and logistical spaces, are shaping a port with greater possibilities to attract new traffic, companies, and investments.

Increased Capacity for Growth

During the meeting, the Port Authority presented the main strategic projects it is currently working on. These include the expansion and improvement of port infrastructure, the completion and enhancement of new operational spaces, the strengthening of railway terminals, and the improvement of the connection with the Mediterranean Corridor.

Of particular interest to the Chinese delegation was the capacity of the docks and the planned expansion projects. Currently, the port has different drafts adapted to its various traffics and is working on new infrastructure capable of reaching up to 16 meters, thus expanding the possibilities for handling larger vessels and new traffics.

In addition, there is a project to promote a large industrial and logistics park linked to the Port, with a planned area of approximately two million square meters, designed to accompany the future growth of the enclave and facilitate the arrival of new productive and logistical activities.

In parallel, the Port Authority is working on the transformation of approximately 300,000 m2 of port land to generate new spaces for companies, economic activities, and innovation, as part of the renewal process of the waterfront.

Innovation, Sustainability, and Connectivity

The transformation of the Port of Alicante is not only about having more land or better docks. The port strategy seeks to complement these infrastructures with a strong commitment to innovation, sustainability, and energy transition.

In this context are projects such as the electrification of the docks and the deployment of OPS systems to allow vessels to connect to the electrical grid during their stay in port, along with initiatives related to renewable energies and green hydrogen.

Connectivity is another pillar of this strategy. The improvement of the railway connection will strengthen Alicante's role as a gateway for goods to and from Madrid and the central peninsula, northern Spain, and, through the Mediterranean Corridor, to the main markets of Central Europe.

This combination of infrastructure, connectivity, available land, innovation, and sustainability aims to position Alicante as a competitive and flexible alternative within the Mediterranean port system.

New Opportunities with China

The representatives of the Chinese delegation identified similarities between Alicante and some of the ports in Jiangsu: enclaves that, while not among the largest in their respective port systems, have specialization, adaptability, and projects aimed at increasing their activity.

During the meeting, possible opportunities related to steel, fertilizers, raw materials, industrial materials, and components related to the wind energy sector, among others, were discussed, as well as the possibility of generating new connections between China, Europe, and North Africa. They also showed interest in sustainability and reducing the carbon footprint.

The Port Authority highlighted, in this regard, both the existing productive fabric in the Alicante area and the port's connections with the Mediterranean and North Africa, especially with Algeria, in addition to the opportunities opening up with Morocco and other markets.

The objective from now on will be for the departments of both ports to delve into these possibilities and identify specific projects and traffics that can be developed jointly.

The Chinese delegation also extended an invitation to the Port Authority officials to visit their facilities and continue to deepen this initial contact.

A Port Beginning to Look Further Afield

The visit also comes at a time of growth for some of the main traffics of the Port of Alicante. Container traffic has registered increases of over 33% in recent months, reinforcing the Port Authority's commitment to diversifying markets and expanding the port's commercial radius.

Along with its traditional connections with the Mediterranean, Europe, the Canary Islands, and North Africa, Alicante is working on opening new opportunities towards Latin America and Asia, with the aim of progressively moving towards greater internationalization of its traffics.

In this new scenario, the strategy involves leveraging planned investments to convert port capacity into economic activity: attracting new operators, facilitating business establishment, generating traffic, and strengthening the role of the Port of Alicante as an infrastructure serving the province's economy.

The visit of the Chinese delegation thus constitutes a first contact, but also an indicator of the growing interest that the transformation process of the Port of Alicante is beginning to generate.

A port that is committed to investing, innovating, and preparing land and infrastructure for growth, and that is beginning to find companies, operators, and ports outside its borders interested in learning about the opportunities it can offer.
