MB Energy successfully completed a methanol bunkering test for TUI Cruises' Mein Schiff 7 at the Ostseekai cruise terminal in the Port of Kiel, a practical step towards lower-carbon marine fuel solutions.
The successful implementation of this bunkering demonstrates that alternative fuels can already be practically integrated into port operations today.
For the Port of Kiel, this is another important step on the path to more climate-friendly shipping and a clear signal of what is possible through close cooperation between shipping companies, energy companies, and ports. "We are pleased to have supported this success as a port location and to have played an active role in the transformation of the maritime industry," the port communicated.
Approximately 25 cubic meters of methanol from renewable raw materials were safely delivered to the vessel for boiler operation while the ship was alongside the pier, with regular terminal activities occurring simultaneously. The test demonstrates that alternative marine fuels can be supplied not only in theory but safely, reliably, and under real operating conditions.
The operation was carried out together with logistics partner Johs. Martens Spedition, which managed the road transport and physical delivery at the terminal. To further support the project's low-emission approach, the delivery truck was fueled with HVO 100 instead of conventional diesel.
For MB Energy, this proof of concept reinforces its role as an integrated partner for maritime customers, from procurement and storage to logistics and final delivery at the pier. Looking ahead, its planned methanol-ready infrastructure in Hamburg-Blumensand will further support the supply of low-carbon methanol and ammonia in Northern Germany and beyond.
