(11:01 a.m. EDT) — Construction has officially started on Royal Caribbean International's fifth Icon Class ship at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Turku, Finland.
The company marked the milestone with a keel-laying ceremony, when the first major building block was lowered into the dry dock where the ship will take shape over the next two years.
As per the shipbuilding tradition, Royal Caribbean and Meyer Turku placed a layer of freshly minted coins beneath the steel block before it was lifted into position to seal good fortune for the ship's journey ahead.
The as-of-yet-unnamed ship is scheduled to debut in 2028. More details, including its name, experiences and entertainment offerings will be announced in the upcoming months.
The fifth newbuild in the Icon Class series will join its sister ships, including Icon of the Seas (2024), Star of the Seas (2025), Legend of the Seas (2026) and Hero of the Seas, debuting in 2027.
The sixth Icon Class vessel is set to arrive in 2029 and the seventh in 2030.
