(8:57 a.m. EDT) — Viking's second hydrogen-powered ship, Viking Astrea, was floated out at Fincantieri's Ancona Shipyard in Italy.
The ceremony began when a ceremonial cord was cut, signaling the release of water into the ship's building dock. The ship will then be moved to a nearby outfitting dock for final construction and interior work.
"The float out of the Viking Astrea represents another important milestone for Viking," said Leah Talactac, president and chief executive officer of Viking. "From the beginning, we have sought thoughtful ways to design more efficient ships, and the Viking Astrea is an important step forward in that ongoing effort."
Scheduled for delivery in May 2027, Viking Astrea will spend its inaugural season sailing the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.
The ship will accommodate up to 998 guests in 499 staterooms. Astrea will feature a propulsion system based partially on liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells, enabling the vessel to operate with zero emissions.
Developed with technology from Isotta Fraschini Motori (IFM), Fincantieri's subsidiary specializing in advanced fuel cell technology, the vessel's propulsion system will be capable of producing up to six megawatts of power.
The company's first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, Viking Libra, is scheduled for delivery in November 2026.
