A three-vessel collision occurred in Valderhaugfjorden near Ålesund, Norway, in the early hours of 4 October. The vessels Hav Frakt, Bergfjord and Xanthia collided with each other. No injuries or pollution have been reported so far.
A Mayday distress call was received by the Norwegian coastal radio system at around 1:37 a.m. local time on 4 October, reporting the collision. The vessels were in a relatively narrow part of Valderhaugfjorden when the collision occurred.
A rescue helicopter and emergency services were quickly mobilised and arrived promptly on the scene. The crews remained on board, as the vessels were still operational.
Two of the vessels were reportedly travelling southward and one northward. All three sustained material damage. Following the collision, two vessels docked in Ålesund and one anchored in the fjord.
Investigations have been opened. No cause has yet been officially declared. Poor visibility, darkness and the narrow waterway at the time of the incident are currently being cited as relevant conditions. The Norwegian Maritime Directorate has stated that the vessels will not be allowed to depart until safety inspections have been completed.
On-site investigations, interviews with crew members and intoxication tests are underway.
