A fire broke out on board a ship after it was hit by an unidentified projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, as reported by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
The UKMTO stated that it received the initial report of the incident at 23:00 GMT on Saturday, September 12, without specifying the exact time the vessel was impacted.
Initially, the maritime authority indicated that the status of the crew, the extent of the damage suffered by the ship, and any possible environmental impact were unknown.
In an update issued on Sunday, September 13, the UKMTO detailed that a fire had been declared on board the vessel as a result of the reported attack.
It added that local authorities were on site providing assistance with the evacuation of crew members.
The UKMTO advised vessels transiting the area to exercise extreme caution and report any suspicious activity while authorities investigate the incident.
The event occurs amidst a series of attacks against commercial shipping linked to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran. Several merchant vessels have recently been subjected to aggressions in the northern Gulf, the Gulf of Oman, and waters near Iraq.
Separately, Iranian authorities reported on Sunday that one person died and three others were injured when a commercial vessel was hit near Hengam Island, off Qeshm Island, in southern Iran, in what Iranian state media described as a U.S. attack.
