According to three US officials cited by The Wall Street Journal, the tanker was seized in the Indian Ocean while it was probably carrying more than 1 million barrels of Iranian oil.
It was intercepted off the western Malaysian coast after transiting the Malacca Strait. AIS Signal indicates that the vessel had been to Qingdao, China and was en route to Khor Fakkan in the UAE.
The tanker had been sanctioned by the US in March for transporting Iranian oil. The two previous vessels seized in April were the tankers Majestic X and Tifani, both intercepted in the Indian Ocean.
The Skywave is a Very Large Crude Carrier built in 2005 sailing under the flag of Botswana. It has a length of 325.98 metres, a beam of 60 metres, and a gross tonnage of 159,860.
