Puerto Armuelles, Chiriquí. The berthing platform of the Puerto Armuelles Multipurpose Dock, in the province of Chiriquí, is being redesigned to expand its operational capacity, adapt it to the demands of global maritime trade, and guarantee its long-term functionality and useful life.
This information was shared by the administrator of the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP), Luis Roquebert, and his team, in a discussion with local authorities and businessmen from Puerto Armuelles, where they detailed the specifics of the Government's flagship project in the Chiriquí region.
"Our objective is not simply to deliver infrastructure; it is to build employment and development opportunities, relying on agricultural and agro-industrial production, natural resources, tourist attractions, a privileged position near the border with Costa Rica, and mainly hardworking people eager for opportunities to develop in their own land," said Roquebert.
As part of the project's strategic planning, the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP) requested a consulting service from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to support the Puerto Armuelles Development Strategy. The result was a recommendation to transform the port into a multipurpose model, supported by oceanographic and tidal studies.
This phase also includes the construction of the conduction line for palm oil export, the installation of a pedestrian walkway for visitors, and other technical adjustments related to the modernization and commissioning of this port infrastructure.
These works constitute 20% of the pending construction of the first stage of the project and involve an additional investment of $10.2 million, through an addendum that is currently awaiting endorsement from the Comptroller General of the Republic.
Parallel to the development of the first stage of the project, the AMP is advancing with a complementary economic evaluation of the Puerto Armuelles Multipurpose Terminal project and an analysis of technical alternatives and conceptual design for the next stage. As part of the Master Plan for the logistical development of the area, conversations are ongoing with at least 12 companies interested in establishing operations in Puerto Armuelles.
The administrator, Roquebert, explained that "the interest we are receiving from potential national and international investors demonstrates that the private sector is also seeing the opportunities that exist in Puerto Armuelles. Our responsibility as a Government is to create the conditions for this to transform into investment, economic activity, and concrete benefits for the population."
With these actions, the AMP is driving the transformation of a facility that was historically intended for smaller draft fishing vessels, to progressively convert it into a multipurpose port, with the capacity to handle new commercial activities and generate investment and development opportunities for the region.
The work, considered one of the main investments promoted by the National Government through the AMP, shows 72% physical progress in its first stage. Among the main milestones achieved are the 100% completion of the access viaduct to the new dock, and approximately 80% progress in the construction of the entity's administrative building.
