The death toll from the capsizing of the government-owned passenger ferry Mbuya Nehanda on Zimbabwe's Lake Kariba has risen to 94, making the August 11th accident the country's deadliest public transport disaster. The vessel was travelling from Kariba town in northern Zimbabwe to the remote community of Chalala when it overturned.
Authorities said the ferry was carrying ~180 passengers and cargo, significantly above the 90-passenger capacity reported by police. With 94 confirmed fatalities and 77 people rescued, at least 171 people are known to have been aboard, although the final number remains uncertain as search and recovery operations continue.
The accident occurred roughly 30 minutes after departure, when deteriorating weather produced waves that began washing over the vessel. Water accumulated inside the ferry before entering the engine compartment and submerging the mechanical bilge pump, leaving the crew unable to remove the incoming water. The vessel eventually turned broadside to the waves and capsized near Long Island.
Survivors reported that concerns had been raised about the weather before departure and that passengers later asked the captain to turn back or seek shelter at a nearby island as conditions deteriorated. According to Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe, Zimbabwe's meteorological authorities had warned of strong waves developing on the Binga side of Lake Kariba and advised that sailing should be suspended. Garwe said the captain, 59-year-old Sign Patsikadova, who died in the accident, nevertheless proceeded with the voyage.
The government has said that the ferry held a valid fitness certificate and that an official inquest will establish the circumstances surrounding the disaster. Garwe attributed the accident primarily to negligence and human error, while the investigation is expected to examine the vessel's condition, loading, weather conditions, crew decisions and safety procedures.
The Mbuya Nehanda was an ageing vessel reportedly donated to the Zimbabwean government in 1985. It was operated by the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency and provided an important transport connection between Kariba and Chalala, a community ~50 kilometres away by water but 400+ kilometres from Kariba by road. The ferry was reportedly operating with only one functioning engine at the time of the accident.
As the vessel began to list, passengers were instructed to move to one side in an attempt to correct the imbalance. Witness accounts indicated that a wave may have caused the engines to stop before the ferry turned across the waves and capsized. Some passengers were unable to locate or properly use life jackets, while others survived by holding on to floating debris or climbing onto the overturned hull.
A rescue boat from Tashinga, supported by personnel from the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority and local boat operators, reached the scene at ~2:00 p.m. and recovered 77 survivors from the water and the overturned ferry. Two of the five crew members survived.
Police have continued the identification of recovered bodies. A further 39 victims were identified on August 19th, bringing the number of identified fatalities to 83. Among those confirmed dead was a one-month-old child from Mola Village in Siakobvu. Seven families have also reported that relatives remain unaccounted for, and authorities have warned that the final death toll could reach 99 or exceed 100.
The scale of the disaster has prompted the government to declare a state of disaster. President Emmerson Mnangagwa has acknowledged shortcomings in the country's maritime capabilities, while authorities have pledged to rehabilitate roads serving the affected communities and provide a replacement vessel.
The loss of the Mbuya Nehanda has also disrupted passenger transport and trade along the Chalala route, which serves isolated communities on Lake Kariba. The lake, situated on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, is one of the world's largest artificial reservoirs and an important transport and economic corridor for communities along its shoreline.
