During the final session of the PIONEERS project, participants had an opportunity to look back upon five years of work and also to look ahead to a climate-neutral future for European ports. Experience that future for yourself by watching their interactive video!
The closing session of PIONEERS and its sister project, MAGPIE, took place on 17 September. The task of these projects, both of which were funded by the EU, was to make European ports more sustainable, in line with the European Green Deal's ambition to achieve a climate-neutral Europe by 2050.
PIONEERS focused specifically on helping to reduce the environmental impact of ports, without compromising their competitiveness. Within that project, Port of Antwerp-Bruges was a leading 'lighthouse' port, which, alongside its partner ports of Barcelona, Constanta and Venlo, demonstrated some of the latest solutions.
The closing session, the title of which was 'Port in Transition: Building Resilient Ecosystems', provided an opportunity to look back on five years of work and to look ahead to what the future holds for European ports.
One of the highlights of that closing session was the interactive film 'The Future is in Your Hands'. While watching it, you choose one of three fictional pioneers and follow their story over a period of 25 years, during which you get to make some crucial decisions. Each pathway leads to a different vision for 2050 – one of four possible climate-resilient futures for European ports.
That way, you can decide for yourself what a climate-neutral port might look like. Experience it here!
The film was designed to be watched on your smartphone and is available with subtitles.
