Shanghai Electric Group loaded 8,000 tons of green methanol onto a container ship at Yangshan Port in Shanghai, setting a world record for the largest single green methanol bunkering operation.
Zhu Zhaokai, Chairman of Shanghai Electric Group, stated that the bunkering operation marked the establishment in China of an integrated industrial chain covering large-scale green methanol production, onshore and offshore storage and transportation, port bunkering, and its final use in ships.
"This industrial model offers a replicable and scalable Chinese solution for the green and low-carbon transformation of international maritime transport," the executive added.
According to Shanghai Customs statistics, since completing China's first green methanol bunkering operation for ships in April 2024, the Port of Shanghai has supplied a cumulative total of 36,000 tons to date.
Produced from biomass resources and renewable energy instead of fossil fuels, green methanol is one of the key alternative fuels for reducing carbon emissions in maritime transport, the chemical industry, and other sectors.
China is further boosting its green energy industries to foster high-quality development while reducing carbon emissions. The new 15th Five-Year Plan for Building a Beautiful China outlines a green industrial leap for the next five years, driving the modernization of traditional industries and accelerating the development of green sectors.
The country's green and low-carbon industries currently control a market of approximately 11 billion yuan (1.62 billion US dollars), distributed among more than 2 million enterprises.
