Alpha Marine Consulting, lomar labs, the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (Marin) and C-Job Naval Architects announced the launch of Wave, the Global Alliance for Ship Decarbonization and Energy Transition, a new maritime innovation cluster created to support the integration and validation of emerging decarbonization technologies.
The alliance brings together complementary capabilities spanning shipowner knowledge and access to vessels, naval engineering and architecture, independent validation, and a specific focus on unlocking co-funding and public and private grant programs.
By actively identifying and securing grant funding opportunities to install and test cutting-edge clean technologies onboard, Wave significantly lowers the commercial and operational threshold for shipowners to participate in early-stage maritime innovation.
The organization will focus on innovations with Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) of 3 to 7: solutions that have demonstrated technical potential but require further integration work, testing, and operational evidence before they can advance towards commercialization.
For technology developers, reaching this stage can reveal a significant gap. A solution may work in a laboratory or controlled environment but still needs to address interfaces with the vessel, safety requirements, classification considerations, operational or logistical limitations, and shipowner expectations. Wave has been structured to incorporate relevant expertise into the process from an early stage and provide a clearer path to validation in a maritime environment.
For shipowners and other stakeholders, the alliance offers a low-risk, highly structured pathway to evaluate and implement cutting-edge technologies. In addition to providing technical integration and performance validation, Wave actively assists shipowners in accessing relevant regional, European, and international grant mechanisms to fund pilot installations.
Instead of requiring the industry to bear technology risks and capital expenditures alone, Wave combines robust engineering with funding facilitation to develop tangible, de-risked business cases for onboard adoption.
Each founding organization contributes a distinct part of the journey. For example, Alpha Marine Consulting brings its expertise in naval engineering, naval architecture, technical integration, and supervision; lomar labs, its experience in supporting and de-risking technology startups, drawing on the shipowner perspective, operational experience, and access provided by its parent company, Lomar; Marin makes available its maritime research, evaluation, and validation capabilities, and C-Job Naval Architects, its expertise in ship design and naval architecture to support effective onboard integration.
Jointly, the organizations will evaluate selected technologies and define an appropriate route for their integration and validation, according to their maturity level, requirements, and relevance to industry challenges.
