MMA and NRC establish framework for offshore nuclear energy development
The Marine Minerals Administration and U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission signed a memorandum of understanding establishing a framework for coordinating oversight of potential offshore nuclear energy projects on the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf. The agreement does not authorize any projects but defines how the two agencies would work together on future licensing and oversight. MMA Acting Director Matt Giacona stated the framework will help build technical expertise and regulatory clarity needed to evaluate whether offshore nuclear technology could eventually be deployed on the Outer Continental Shelf, which encompasses roughly 3.2 billion acres under federal jurisdiction.
