Chile and the United States held their first high-level meeting regarding the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, thereby continuing to advance discussions aimed at improving market access conditions for Chilean exports to the U.S. market.
As part of the ongoing dialogue and negotiation process between both countries, Jeffrey Goettman, Deputy Assistant U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), visited and was received by Undersecretary of International Economic Relations, Paula Estévez, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the meeting, the priorities of the Chilean export basket were reviewed, and information was exchanged regarding the importance of these products for both the national economy and the U.S. market.
Following this, both authorities agreed to continue discussions in the coming weeks, maintaining as a priority the search for better conditions for national export sectors and the strengthening of the economic and commercial relationship between Chile and the United States.
This visit represents an important signal of the relevance both parties assign to this process and their willingness to maintain a high-level political and technical dialogue. Undersecretary Estévez emphasized that "this visit reflects a willingness to continue working to find solutions. We are conducting serious negotiations, with a long-term perspective and with the objective of defending Chile's interests and improving market access conditions for national products in the U.S. market."
This process has involved various political and technical working instances dating back to 2025, which the Government has continued. In mid-April, a Subrei delegation traveled to Washington D.C., where they held technical meetings with USTR representatives, and subsequently, in July, Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna met with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
The Undersecretary added that "we value the dialogue we have maintained with the United States and will continue to work constructively, both politically and technically, to identify areas that allow progress towards mutually beneficial solutions."
On the morning of Tuesday, August 25, a closing meeting will be held where a roadmap is expected to be defined for continuing negotiations in the coming weeks.
