Mexico and Chile held the XVI Free Trade Commission (FTC) of the Free Trade Agreement between both countries, the highest administrative body of the agreement. The meeting reviewed the evolution of the bilateral economic relationship and addressed initiatives aimed at strengthening commercial integration, fostering investments, and promoting economic cooperation between the parties.
The Commission highlighted the solidity of bilateral economic ties and the value of the FTA as a tool to boost trade, investment, and the generation of new opportunities.
During the session, authorities reviewed the performance of trade and investment flows, as well as the challenges and opportunities to deepen the bilateral economic relationship.
Likewise, the countries exchanged information on various regulatory, sanitary, and phytosanitary matters of mutual interest.
"The economic relationship between Chile and Mexico, built on more than two decades of free trade thanks to our FTA, has enormous opportunities to continue deepening. We want to take this link to a new stage, taking advantage of the complementarity of our economies and exploring new opportunities in trade, investment, services, digital economy, and value chains. This Commission is a key instance to review these deepening opportunities and continue building a more integrated economic relationship with greater value generation for both countries," commented the Undersecretary of International Economic Relations of Chile, Paula Estévez.
For his part, the Undersecretary of Foreign Trade of Mexico, Luis Rosendo Gutiérrez, commented that "Mexico and Chile strengthen their commercial relationship and reaffirm their commitment to a more competitive and inclusive economic integration, through the full utilization of the Treaty's potential, the strengthening of cooperation and trade facilitation mechanisms, as well as the conditions that allow for greater opportunities for companies, workers, and consumers of both nations."
Within the framework of the Commission, Chile and Mexico signed Decision No. 11, through which the transposition of the specific Rules of Origin to the Harmonized System 2022 was adopted. This provides greater legal certainty and facilitates the correct application of the Treaty's provisions by economic operators in both countries.
Similarly, both delegations agreed to advance a work agenda aimed at strengthening technical and economic cooperation, including the creation of a mechanism for the exchange of trade statistics to evaluate the utilization of current agreements and support decision-making in trade policy.
They also entrusted to continue joint work to identify opportunities for the development of global and regional value chains, with a view to enhancing productive complementarity and economic integration between Chile and Mexico.
Finally, the delegations reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the bilateral economic relationship and strengthening the institutional mechanisms of the Free Trade Agreement, for the benefit of the growth, competitiveness, and development of both countries.
