The State Railway Company (EFE) and the Municipality of Frutillar held a working meeting to finalize the details for the launch of the new bimodal cargo service, which will feature a transfer station in the southern city.
The logistics project aims to transport products related to the salmon industry between the Los Lagos Region and the ports of Bio Bio.
The meeting was attended by executives from the state company and the Mayor of Frutillar, Javier Arismendi, who shared the progress and projections of the aforementioned transport plan, which was announced by PortalPortuario in 2021.
The communal authority stated that during the day "we refined details and updated information regarding the train's operation, where Frutillar will be the collection center for loading and unloading containers, which is already progressing rapidly, and it is estimated that the operation of this collection center in Frutillar will begin between November and December."
"This will generate more work within the commune. We are grateful for the willingness that EFE has always shown to receive us, and also when they visit Frutillar, we have always had a good relationship with EFE," said Arismendi.
Meanwhile, the company indicated that "we met with the Mayor of Frutillar to share the progress and projections of a bimodal cargo service that connects the commune with the ports of the Bio Bio Region, continuing the successful railway pilot developed during 2025 for the salmon industry."
"The initiative seeks to integrate rail and road transport with Frutillar as a connection point between both modes. Following the positive results of the pilot, we continue to evaluate alternatives to advance this logistics model and the opportunities it can generate for the commune and the productive activity of the area," EFE stated.
It is worth remembering that the route had its test run in July 2025 to transport refrigerated containers. The railway initiative is part of a project by the state company with public and private actors. During last year's evaluation, a cargo of 400 tons in 15 containers was sent from Frutillar aboard the train to be - subsequently - unloaded at San Vicente Terminal Internacional (SVTI) and transferred to a vessel for export.
