Column by Rubén Castro Hurtado, General Manager Empresa Portuaria Iquique
The proposal for a regional logistics policy promoted by Empresa Portuaria Iquique (EPI), which has been socialized with different actors and protagonists in the region, requires more than a shared vision: it needs a clear roadmap that allows ideas to be transformed into concrete and sustainable actions.
In this context, the development of a Master Plan becomes a fundamental tool to guide the logistical development of the territory, aligning the different public and private actors around common objectives.
A Master Plan allows identifying gaps, prioritizing investments, defining implementation stages, and establishing responsibilities, providing coherence and continuity to initiatives over time. In addition, it facilitates coordination between port infrastructure, land connectivity, logistics zones, and associated services, strengthening regional competitiveness and its integration with national and international markets.
Within this framework, Empresa Portuaria Iquique is in the final stage of preparing and drafting the Regional Logistics Master Plan, an instrument that seeks to consolidate this long-term strategic vision for the logistical development of the territory and that results from the study of logistical, infrastructure, and business variables associated with the most relevant productive activities in the region.
Once this Master Plan is concluded, said document will be made available to regional authorities for their analysis and consideration, in order to promote adequate and necessary institutional coordination with the purpose of advancing towards the materialization of a consensual and sustainable regional logistics policy. It identifies, for example, cross-border routes, port accessibility, logistics centers, and support zones as essential aspects aimed at improving competitiveness.
In this way, the roadmap not only orders the implementation process of the regional logistics policy of Tarapacá but also generates certainty for decision-making. Likewise, it promotes collaboration among the different actors in the logistics ecosystem and contributes to positioning Iquique as a strategic platform for trade and development in northern Chile.
