The President of the Republic of Chile, José Antonio Kast, was present at the celebration of Truck Driver's Day, an event held at the Passenger Terminal of the Port of Valparaíso. The president delivered a speech to the attendees where he emphasized reinforcing road safety and promoting the development of bioceanic corridors.
In his presentation, the president remarked that one of the country's main problems is insecurity, a situation directly linked to the work of Chilean transporters. For Kast, it is "unacceptable" that drivers do not have all the guarantees to travel throughout the country.
"One never feared traveling on Route 5, and one was proud to tell neighbors that we had a route where someone could take a vehicle in Arica and reach Puerto Montt; there was no fear of traveling on our routes. But a moment came when, in the Southern Macrozone, people no longer wanted to travel at night, and citizens became accustomed to having to take certain precautions. Why? That is unacceptable," he remarked.
Furthermore, José Antonio Kast assured that "we have to safeguard our security step by step, and we are doing so."
Regarding land infrastructure, the president referred to joint initiatives between Chile and Argentina, highlighting the need to continue increasing cooperation between both nations, such as the improvement of the route in the Los Libertadores Pass and the development of the Capricorn Bioceanic Corridor.
"Chile can do much more; we have all the conditions. Yes, we have an infrastructure problem, it is evident, Los Libertadores Pass closed for more than 30 days. When something like this happens, unity between two nations is fundamental, and that unity will continue to increase; there we have the bioceanic corridor in the Antofagasta and Iquique area. If Argentina does well, Chile does well," he indicated.
"Argentina saves about 15 days of transport, and we do it by truck. These trucks will use our ports, which is why there must be an investment and a vision for the future, so we have good news ahead," the President concluded.
