The works, which are in their final phase, represent an investment of 1.8 million euros and the generation of more than 20,000 new square meters that will be allocated to uses linked to port operations.
The objective, as explained by the President of the Port Authority of Santander (APS), César Díaz, is "to continue generating space in the Port for general merchandise storage, increasing the capacity to respond to growth and new traffic demands."
Santander, May 15, 2026. The President of the Port Authority of Santander (APS), César Díaz, reported this morning on the progress of the works for the incorporation and adaptation of plots from the Wissocq industrial estate into the Port's enclosed area. A "strategic" action that, for Díaz, aims to "generate more storage space for general merchandise, thus reinforcing the capacity to respond to the growth and new demands of port traffic."
The works, included in Phase I of the project, are nearing completion, with demolitions and installations already executed and the works currently focused on the placement of new fences and the finishing of the esplanades.
This action, which involves an investment of 1.8 million euros by the APS and the generation of more than 20,000 new square meters, has allowed, as explained by the head of the port administration, "to transform previously underutilized spaces into a new operational surface prepared for logistics and port uses."
Interventions like this "are part of our strategy of continuously seeking solutions to increase the capacity of our infrastructures and improve service to our clients, thus reinforcing our competitiveness," he insisted.
The action includes the adaptation of the land, the execution of pavements, and the construction of a new perimeter security fence.
Currently, the planned demolitions and associated installations have been completed, and the work is focused on the placement of the new perimeter fences. In addition, work is underway on the completion of the esplanades, through the regularization of the land, the spreading of granular material, the formation of the concrete pavement, and, finally, the execution of the bituminous mixture layer that will provide surfaces suitable for port activity.
The operation also includes the management of construction and demolition waste generated during the works, prioritizing its segregation, recovery, and delivery to authorized managers, in line with the environmental criteria established in the project.
Díaz emphasized that "we will continue to guarantee the Port's capacity to grow through interventions like this or others included in our Investment Plan," which foresees public-private actions worth 270 million euros until 2029. These include the construction of new public docks, the vertical car silo, the reorganization of existing terminals, and the recovery of port lands such as the curvilinear triangle or the Transport City.
"Our goal is to grow – right now we contribute to the GDP and employment in Cantabria with 14% and 11%, respectively – so that Cantabria can grow with us." To do this, "we must offer the industrial and productive sector the best opportunities for access to international markets with competitive costs," he concluded.
